Half my msn list of friends shows up with the butterfly as their avatar.įile transfer speeds is way too much work to fix unless someone who really loves to send files on msn fixes it.Ĭustom emoticons works just fine in libpurple but some work for adium is needed to be able to send them. Mostly: file transfer speeds, emoticon reliability, avatar reliability and msn nickname reliability. Its not one feature, its a LOT of features. And if they are putting in a lot of effort, its certainly not showing compared to the likes of aMSN. Of all the messenger clients to put the least effort in, the team chose msn. Seriously, the reason why adium isnt as popular as it should be, is because of its poor msn integration. Msn is probably the most used messenger on desktop or laptop computers, and it gets the worst compatibility on Adium. Half my msn list of friends shows up with the butterfly as their avatar. Just because your-most-wanted-feature isn't in there, doesn't mean that MSN isn't taken care of. Several MSN features were added in 1.3.2, when the dev team went from MSNP12 to MSNP15 - Thats quite a jump. It is the reason why I dont bother with adium at all. The GUI for adding a custom emoticon from a message window (aka stealing it) should be relative to the message window itself.Kamil wrote:I really think the adium team needs to do something about the *major* lack of proper compatibility with MSN.–The GUI should prevent the user from breaking requirements F.4 and F.5, warning him/her with an error message.–This GUI should list all the custom emoticon, along with their shortcuts, enabling the user to add/remove them or edit their shortcuts. The GUI for managing custom emoticons should extend the current “Customize.” view inside the Appearance panel, under Adium preferences. That means it will be displayed for every occurrence of the shortcut associated, even on protocols that do not support custom emoticons Any custom emoticon added to an user’s repository is to be considered a “plain emoticon” as well. The user should be able to delete any custom emoticon in his repository.–There might not be more than one image associated with the same shortcut.–There might not be more than one shortcut associated with the same emoticon image. The user should be able to modify the shortcut of any custom emoticon in his repository. The user should be able to add a custom emoticon sent by others, as he/she sees in the chat window, just selecting it and providing the shortcut that represents it.The user should be able to add a custom emoticon, providing both the image file and the shortcut that represents it inside a message.Hence, the goal of this patch is to extend Adium’s GUI to support the managing and the sending of custom emoticon using libpurple support.Īfter this brief introduction, these are my requirements: Functional Requirements (F.) While the GUI support for receiving custom emoticons is there already, the code for sending and managing them is not. engine used for communication over almost all supported protocols). In fact, the user expects to be able to add/remove a single custom emoticon and “steal” them from his/her buddies, which is, copy it on-the-fly while seeing it on a chat window.Īdium has the power to send/receive custom emoticons already (via libpurple, the comm. The user expects to be able to customise the list of custom emoticons he/she can send to a finer level than the one contained in emoticon packs. The only difference is that, when sending a message containing a custom emoticon over a protocol that supports them, the receiver is able to see the emoticon’s image without the need of having the image file on his/her computer. A custom emoticon is an plain emoticon as the ones contained inside Adium’s emoticon packs. The main idea here is to enable the final user to manage and send custom emoticons. Together with my informal review, I’d like to write down some formal documentation of the process: I’m starting today a review of my custom emoticon patch for Adium 1.4.
